The Process Systems Engineering (PSE) Lab at the Department of Chemical Engineering, National Chung Hsing University, was founded on August 1, 2016. It focuses on the analysis, modeling, simulation, optimization, design, control, and operation of process systems using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The lab’s research spans industries including chemical, petrochemical, electrochemical, pharmaceutical, biochemical, and biomedical systems. It covers a broad range of scales, from molecular and nano-levels to large-scale production facilities and supply chains. Target Audience and Geographic Focus We are looking for motivated students with an engineering background who are interested in Process Systems Engineering (PSE). The program is open to students from all nationalities, but priority will be given to those from the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, and Africa. Students should have at least an undergraduate level of education in engineering and preferably experience with programming and simulation software like Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS. Familiarity with programming languages such as MATLAB and GAMS is preferred. This program aims to attract international talent while exposing students to Taiwan's research environment, specifically focusing on the development of skills in PSE for students from these targeted regions. Collaborations and Industry Partners The PSE Lab has strong partnerships with Oriental Union Chemical Corporation (OUCC) and LCY Chemical Corp, major chemical companies in Taiwan. These collaborations provide students with hands-on experience in industrial-level processes, allowing them to apply academic knowledge in real-world situations. Interns will work on projects related to digital transformation techniques, addressing real-world industrial challenges in process systems engineering. Interns will be based at the PSE Lab in Taiwan and have access to cutting-edge resources, support from faculty members, and opportunities to engage with Taiwanese students in a multicultural research setting.
Program Execution Plan The internship program will run from January 2025 to December 2025, for a duration of up to six months. The program can accommodate up to 20 students, each receiving comprehensive training and mentorship tailored to their individual learning goals. Training and Internship Structure Interns will focus on several key research themes in Process Systems Engineering, including:
1. Data-based and Hybrid Modeling: Developing models that combine data-driven and traditional methods to simulate complex processes.
2. Advanced Control Techniques: Using data-based or hybrid control methods to improve process stability and efficiency.
3. Optimization Methods: Applying AI and ML-based optimization techniques to enhance the design and operation of process systems.
4. Fault Detection and Diagnosis: Developing tools to detect and diagnose faults in process systems early.
5. Virtual Sensors: Designing software-based sensors for real-time data inference.
6. Process Synthesis and Design: Working on the efficient and sustainable design of process systems.
7. Process Integration and Intensification: Exploring ways to improve efficiency through integration and intensification strategies.
8. Production Planning and Scheduling: Developing optimization tools for planning and scheduling industrial processes.
9. Machine Learning Applications in Industry: Applying machine learning techniques to solve industry-specific challenges.
10. Case Studies: Analyzing real-world industrial cases for practical learning. Interns will work on both individual and group projects, applying theoretical knowledge to solve complex problems.
Mandarin Chinese language training will also be offered, giving students a chance to enhance their language skills and better integrate into Taiwanese society. Budget and Subsidy Allocation The program has requested a subsidy of from Ministry of Education, Taiwan to support research activities and cover interns' living expenses during their stay in Taiwan. The funds will be allocated in the following areas:
• Living Expenses: Interns will receive a stipend to cover accommodation, food, and transportation.
• Research Materials: The budget will fund necessary research tools, software, and materials.
• Cultural and Language Training: Some of the funds will support Mandarin Chinese courses and cultural exchange activities to enrich the intern experience.
Expected Outcomes At the conclusion of the six-month internship, participants will have gained deep technical knowledge in Process Systems Engineering, with hands-on experience in simulation, optimization, and control of complex systems using AI and ML tools. Interns will also gain valuable industrial experience, preparing them for careers in fields like chemical engineering, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. In addition to technical skills, participants will benefit from cultural immersion and the opportunity to build cross-cultural communication skills through language training and engagement with local Taiwanese students. This program will give students a well-rounded experience, combining academic rigor with practical, industry-relevant knowledge. Conclusion This internship provides an exceptional opportunity for students from the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, and Africa to immerse themselves in cutting-edge research in Taiwan. Through the combination of academic excellence, industry collaboration, and cultural exchange, participants will be equipped with the skills and experiences needed to become future leaders in Process Systems Engineering. The program’s focus on diversity ensures that students from different regions will both contribute to and benefit from the unique learning environment in Taiwan, enriching the academic and industrial landscape alike.
