The Environmental Biotechnology & Biorefinery Lab at National Sun Yat-sen University is a dynamic research collective, bringing together scientists and students from diverse backgrounds. Our primary focus is on the development of bioenergy and biomass-based materials. We are addressing the global issue of plastic waste, which degrades into particles that permeate oceans, land, and even the air at high altitudes, affecting human and animal life worldwide.

A key area of our research is FDCA (Furandicarboxylic Acid), identified by the U.S. Department of Energy as one of the 12 most promising bio-based chemicals. Dubbed the "sleeping giant," FDCA is pivotal in synthesizing Polyethylene 2, 5-furandicarboxylate (PEF), a new generation of biodegradable materials with enhanced properties. The production of PEF from FDCA offers significant environmental benefits, including a 51%-58% reduction in energy consumption and approximately 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional PET production. Another focus is DMF (Dimethylfuran), a high-density biofuel that outperforms bioethanol in energy output upon combustion. With the European fuel market increasingly demanding biofuel-blended diesel, many countries aim to boost biofuel usage to about 30% by 2030, aligning with carbon reduction goals. Our research spans three critical areas: green energy technology, innovative agriculture, and the circular economy. By converting a substantial amount of biomass waste into high-value-added FDCA and DMF, we aim to mitigate white pollution and the greenhouse effect, thereby fulfilling the objectives of a circular economy, energy conservation, and carbon reduction.

In 2024, we are excited to host three graduate students for six months. This opportunity is ideal for those with a keen interest in biorefinery, renewable energy, or biomass-based materials. It's a chance to immerse in green technology and experience diverse cultures. Eligibility extends to students pursuing Master's or Doctoral studies in Environmental Engineering, Material Science, Energy, or related fields. We encourage those passionate about making a difference in sustainable technology and environmental conservation to apply for this enriching experience.
