Overview: In this project, the intern will participate the design and development of lightweight automotive wheels for supersports with NKUST and iPE. During the design stage, finite element analysis (FEA) will be conducted to assess the safety performance and endurance to ensure the wheel design meets the design requirement. The intern will be familiar with the three necessary functional tests of wheel, where the bending fatigue test and radial fatigue test follow the TÜV standard, and the 13-degree impact test complies with the SAE standard J-175. After fully understanding the testing details, the intern will learn the technique to conduct the FEA equivalent to the testing conditions. Optimization and tuning design of the wheels will be implemented based on the FEA results until all analyses results meet the criteria specified by the two standards above. After design stage, the intern will join the manufacturing processes, including forging, spin forming, heat treatment, machining, and painting to thoroughly understand the process flow of manufacturing a new forged wheel. Once the prototype is manufactured, the intern will take part in the DV (design verification) test to validate the wheel design. Composites wheel made of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) may be developed as well.
