Hello! We are the Nanoparticle and Air Quality Laboratory in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Ours team at Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has a long history of the aerosol sampling and monitoring researches.
Our research results, Personal Nanoparticle Sampler (PENs) and NCTU micro-orifice cascade impactor (NMCI), are used for workplaces and ambient PM0.1 sampling. The recently developed device, Nanoparticle Inertial Classifier (NIC), can combine with scientific instruments to achieve real-time PM0.1 monitoring. Gaseous pollutants, particulate matters, and biological particles (such as virus) in indoor air are harmful to human health. For example, cooking, smoking, aerosol sprays and painting will result in indoor air pollution and more studies are needed. In medical workplaces, the workers have different possibilities in exposing to these infectious airborne viruses but the major group, who inevitably operates close to possible infected customers, is dental practitioners (including dentists and assistants). During dental operation that requires patients to open their mouths, the transmission of disease from virus-containing medium (i.e., saliva and blood) easily occurs without appropriate protection. High load of viral particles is released through using dental devices for instance, high-speed rotary handpiece, air-water syringe, and suction devices. The mixing of fluid as result of fluctuating of air inside patient mouth, would disperse outward to environment and may traverse across the operating area. Therefore, the study of pollutant dispersion, monitoring and control of indoor air quality is important, including CFD simulation and experiment, sampling and monitoring via reference instruments, air sensor applications and data analysis and ventilation control etc.
Outcome of this study will be helpful to improve the indoor air quality and provide good practice guidelines using appropriate local and central ventilation devices to reduce dispersed airborne pollutants during medical practices . To achieve such a goal, collaboration among expert scientists in this field would expedite the process. Prof. Chuen-Jinn Tsai's team at Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) has a high reputation in the aerosol studies. Both his expertise in CFD simulation and experimental studies would be beneficial to both parties in achieving the goal. His fully equipped laboratory including high precision apparatus including SMPS, CPC, air monitors and sensors etc. would reduce the time of study.
