Process Systems Engineering (PSE) Lab was established on August 1, 2016, in Chemical Engineering Department, National Chung Hsing University. PSE Lab's research programs are mostly on the analysis, modeling, simulation, optimization, design, control, and operation of process systems through artificial intelligence and machine learning as the leveraging tools. The research applications are very broad including chemical, petrochemical, electrochemical, pharmaceutical, biochemical, and biomedical systems. Length scales to be covered are from the molecular to the nano- and micro-scales to very large-scale production facilities and even complete supply chains. We are looking for responsible and motivated person who has interests in PSE.
The student’s educational level should be at least in undergraduate study of engineering background. The student will be exposed to PSE related software, i.e., Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, etc. Programming skills, especially in MATLAB and GAMS programming languages, are preferred.
We will meet with the intern upon arrival for project discussion and describe the details as well as the intern’s learning expectation. We will make sure that the student is well supported and ensure that the internship outcomes will be met accordingly. The multidisciplinary area of PSE is concerned with designing and operating processes.
We would welcome work that cover the benefits of digital transformation techniques in PSE of the following themes:
- Data-based or hybrid (phenomenological + data) models;
- Advanced control based on data-based or hybrid approaches;
- Optimization based on data-based or hybrid approaches;
- Fault detection and diagnosis;
- Virtual sensors;
- Process synthesis and design;
- Process integrations and intensification;
- Production planning and scheduling;
- Applications of machine learning techniques to industrial applications; and
- Case studies.
The intern will gain excellent technical training in a resourceful laboratory, university, and industry with processes that are complex, highly integrated, present high dimensions and strong nonlinearity. A lot of unique opportunities to engage in scientific discussions with Taiwanese students can be expected. Taiwan is a country with beautiful weather, friendly people and delicious food, so the student can expect a lot of fun events with lab mates. The student will also be engaged with Chinese language training to strengthen their language ability. The student will be stationed in PSE lab during their stay in Taiwan.
The duration will be at least 1 month up to 6 months at most. The budget will be allocated for research and their living expenses. The industry-university collaboration internship program is expected to cultivate new talents in PSE and increase the exposure of Taiwan chemical industries to foreign students.
