Domestic cats are important companion animals that are closely related to human life. Maintaining good respiratory health in cats can prevent the transmission of pathogens to humans, thereby jointly maintaining a 'One Health' environment. This project plans to recruit two master's or bachelor's graduates between May and October 2024. We hope to have candidates with a background in biomedical sciences, preferably veterinary science, and an interest in fields such as animal health, One Health, and zoonotic diseases come to Taiwan for an internship. Over six months, interns will visit animal hospitals to learn about sampling of feline respiratory specimens, learn in vitro cultivation of feline cell lines in the laboratory, identify feline respiratory viruses (such as feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus, and feline influenza virus), use molecular biology techniques to detect viral nucleic acids, sequence viral genomes, perform phylogenetic analysis of viruses, and calculate prevalence rates using medical statistics. Through these internship activities, the interns coming to Taiwan will understand how veterinary scientists accurately monitor the respiratory health of cats, obtain data results, and compile reports, ultimately becoming talented in animal health medicine.
