Environmental Biotechnology & Biorefinery Lab of National Sun Yat-sen University is a diverse research group comprising scientists and students with different backgrounds and focuses primarily on producing bioenergy or biomass-based materials. Currently, plastic waste generated yearly has been degraded into plastic particles, distributed in the oceans, land, humans, and animals worldwide, and even in the air at high altitudes. FDCA is considered the key monomer with the most market potential and is called one of the 12 most potential bio-based chemicals by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is also known as the "sleeping giant" and can be applied in many fields. More importantly, it can synthesize a new generation of biodegradable materials with superior properties - Polyethylene 2, 5-furandicarboxylate (PEF). The production of PEF by FDCA has excellent environmental advantages. Compared with the preparation of PET, energy consumption can be reduced by 51%-58%, and greenhouse gas emissions can also be reduced by about 60%. DMF is a high-density biofuel that produces more energy than bioethanol after combustion. The European fuel market has increased the demand for biofuel blended diesel. Many countries also hope that by 2030, the use of biofuels will increase to about 30%. To achieve the goal of carbon reduction, this research topic covers the three principal axes of green energy technology, new agriculture, and circular economy. Suppose a large amount of biomass waste can be converted into high-value-added FDCA and DMF. White pollution and the greenhouse effect can be alleviated in that case, fully meeting circular economy goals, energy saving, and carbon reduction.
We will host three graduate students for six months in 2023. You are welcome to apply if you are specifically interested in biorefinery, renewable energy, or biomass-based materials. It is an excellent opportunity to learn green technology and experience different cultures.
