During the COVID-19 pandemic, the proliferation of insomnia, one of the sleep disorders, has risen sharply from 24% to 40%. Under this scenario, a general solution at home is to "listen to music before going to bed" to facilitate sleep. However, does listening to music before bed or practicing mindfulness meditation really help promote sleep? Literature of sleep medicine indicates that pre-sleep music does not impose prominent effects on sleep promotion, and may even shrink the total sleep time. This subjective-objective inconsistency may result from the confounding factors, such as the music type, individual trait, and the method of music listening. In other words, pre-sleep music and mindfulness may regulate sleep through altering the brain functionality, but its promotion effect may also depend on individual traits and given methods of music listening. The research team plan to implement the research protocols in this project by conducting a electroencephalography (EEG) experiment to evaluate the promotion effect of pre-sleep music intervention.

We are recruiting the students with the following criteria:

1. Has high motivation to learn EEG data collection and analyses.

2. Has interests on mindfulness or music studies in neuroscience

3. Has basic ability of experimental design and statistics

4. Has basic programming ability using Python
