This internship/research project is hosted by the IONTU ECHO Lab at the Institute of Oceanography, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. Our lab specializes in the quantitative characterization of sedimentary processes using micro-XRF core scanning (XRF-CS) and Computed Tomography (CT), with applications in paleoseismology, paleoenvironmental reconstruction, source-to-sink sedimentary systems, and carbon capture and storage (CCS). Students will join an active research environment that combines non-destructive core scanning, sedimentological interpretation, and data-driven analysis. More information about the lab can be found at https://stevenjjhuang.wordpress.com/.
Selected students will participate in ongoing laboratory research related to sediment cores and subsurface materials. Depending on their background and the project schedule, research activities may include core description and handling, CT scanning and image processing, XRF-core scanning, integration of structural and geochemical datasets, event-bed and facies interpretation, quantitative data analysis, and exploratory work related to digital rock physics and CCS applications. Depending on project timing, weather, safety requirements, and berth availability, participants may also have opportunities to join field sampling and, when possible, research-vessel-related activities.
The preferred duration is at least 2 months, and 2-6 months is strongly encouraged under current TEEP rules. Applicants should be currently enrolled in a university degree program outside Taiwan and remain enrolled during the visit. We welcome students from geology, geoscience, oceanography, environmental science, earth science, geophysics, physics, engineering, data science, or related fields. Good English communication skills are required. Experience in sedimentology, geochemistry, image analysis, coding, or laboratory work is helpful but not mandatory. Under current TEEP rules, applicants who already hold a PhD or are already studying in Taiwan are generally not eligible.
TEEP participants at NTU are registered as Research Visiting Students. They may receive student status activation, a student ID, a campus network account, access to NTU campus facilities, and a certificate upon completion. NTU OIA can assist with dormitory applications, but housing is self-funded and subject to availability. Participants should also arrange appropriate insurance before arrival.
Please note that NTU charges a Research Visiting Program fee, and TEEP participants receive a 50% discount. For stays of 32-62 days, the discounted fee is currently NTD 7,500; for 63-92 days, NTD 10,000; and for 93-180 days, NTD 15,000. In addition, from January 1, 2026, all participants are required to pay the NTD 400 information networking infrastructure service fee. Scholarship support may be available according to current TEEP and host-project arrangements, and exact details will be communicated during recruitment and interview.
