Microproteins (MPs) are small proteins composed of fewer than 100 amino acids that play important roles in
biological processes such as tumor progression, stress response, and cell signaling. However, they have often
been overlooked because traditional genome annotation methods exclude short open reading frames (ORFs).
With recent advances in next-generation sequencing and multi-omics technologies, it has become possible to
systematically identify and study these small yet functional proteins. In this project, students will utilize high
throughput multi-omics data and bioinformatics tools to identify and characterize putative microproteins in
the parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. This internship will provide participants with hands-on
experience in computational biology, genomics, and data analysis while contributing to the first exploration of
microproteins in protozoa. Two internship positions are available for international students from Asian
countries (but not limited to) to join this research project
