This international exchange program is designed to cultivate cross-border research talent and accelerate the development of commercially viable smart hydrogel technologies for medical applications. By integrating exchange students, the program aims to enhance Taiwan’s visibility and influence in the Asia-Pacific biomedical material sector. Participants will engage in translational research directly connected to high-demand medical product categories—particularly smart hydrogels with applications in anti-adhesion barriers, hemostasis, wound healing, and post-operative tissue regeneration. These materials represent a growing commercial segment within the global wound care and surgical product market, with increasing demand for next-generation solutions offering targeted delivery, biodegradable performance, and ease of surgical application. The project will build upon Taiwan’s existing biomedical infrastructure to co-develop and validate hydrogel-based products with enhanced safety, biocompatibility, and international regulatory readiness. Key industrial partners—such as PROVIEW-MBD BIOTECH CO., LTD and National Institute of Applied Research Center—will be co-host participants for hands-on product development, pilot production, and clinical testing simulations. Additionally, research institutes and hospitals will provide access to specialized materials testing and biological evaluation platforms to facilitate commercial translation. Participants will receive targeted training in polymer material design, medical device regulations, and smart hydrogel product validation, culminating in a capstone project involving the development and preclinical assessment of commercial-grade hydrogel formulations. This initiative positions Taiwan as a regional hub for smart biomaterials innovation and strengthens its capacity to export high-value medical solutions. By integrating global perspectives with commercial application, the program ensures that its outcomes directly address market needs, fostering sustainable competitiveness for Taiwan in the global biomedical materials market.
