Project Overview: This research project focuses on designing and developing advanced surface coatings that simultaneously resist corrosion and prevent biofouling. These dual-function materials aim to extend the lifespan and performance of metals and alloys used in harsh environments, including marine, industrial, and biomedical settings. The approach integrates antifouling polymers (such as zwitterionic copolymers) with functional nanomaterials (e.g., graphene oxide, silica nanoparticles, or metal oxides) to create environmentally friendly coatings with superior protective properties. Participants will receive mentorship from experienced researchers, access to state-of-the-art laboratories, and opportunities to co-author academic publications or conference presentations.
Key Activities: Synthesis and modification of antifouling and corrosion-inhibiting materials Surface coating and characterization using SEM, FTIR, XPS, and electrochemical methods Evaluation of antibacterial and antifouling performance Corrosion resistance testing (e.g., salt spray, Tafel polarization) Application testing on different substrates (e.g., steel, aluminum, or biomedical alloys)
