U.S.-Taiwan Collaboration to Promote International Educational Exchanges in Support of Free and Open Education

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to support Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) in strengthening educational cooperation with the United States, as a part of the U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative launched in December 2020. Under the Biden Administration, the United States continues to implement the Initiative and helps ensure that U.S. campuses remain bastions of innovation, intellectual freedom, and values we share with Taiwan.  

The Ministry of Education will organize a cross-agency delegation to join the NAFSA 2022 Annual Conference Expo in Denver, Colorado from May 31 to June 2. Headed by Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Lio Mon-chi, the Taiwan delegation is comprised of leaderships from the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University, National Dong Hwa University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan), and Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET).

The delegation will attend the opening ceremony of the Study in Taiwan Booth at the NAFSA Conference joined by State Department and AIT representatives. To capitalize on the opportunity of having education experts from both Taiwan and the United State gathered in Denver, MOE has arranged a joint signing ceremony where Taiwan university leadership representatives will sign MOUs to expand language exchange opportunities with their U.S. counterparts, followed by the Taiwan-U.S. Higher Education Dialogue in partnership with AIT and FICHET at the Grand Hyatt Denver. In addition, the Taiwan delegation and State Department representatives will also attend the Global Partnership Session at the NAFSA Conference where President Dr. Su Huey-jen, along with Taiwan’s long-term U.S. university partners, will talk about initiatives Taiwan has launched to transform the higher education sector in the face of COVID-19 as well as best practices of promoting collaboration on bilingual education.

This series of education events in Denver reaffirms the commitment of the United States and Taiwan to deepening cooperation on international education, particularly in English and Mandarin-language education.  This also highlights the importance of cooperation on international education among like-minded, democratic partners in support of free and open education.
